Summer 2011 Intensive Practice Period and Lecture Series

6/20/2011, 6:00am - 7/14/2011, 9:00am at Myoshinji

Join us this summer for a rare opportunity to experience intensive Zen practice in a monastic setting. All practitioners—from experienced to new—are welcome to participate.

This is a good opportunity for experienced practitioners to engage in monastic practice under the guidance of a full-time resident teacher. At the same time, it's a chance for the less experienced, or even beginners, to experience ongoing daily Zen practice in a group setting.

During the day, we will follow a varied schedule of meditation, services, work practice, study, and talks (sample daily schedule). Participants will have daily opportunities to learn and review zendo and service procedures, honing skills and acquiring new ones. We will enjoy working together on a variety of ecological projects, gardening, and general monastery work in beautiful rural Green County, Wisconsin.

  • Each day starts with zazen (Zen meditation) followed by a traditional Soto Zen service, and silent oryoki breakfast.
  • We will have 12 study classes throughout the intensive led by Myoyu Roshi. Students will also have ample time for study and sutra copying.
  • Cathy Hauck, director of ABC Yoga Studio, will be leading several yoga classes each week, to help us improve flexibility, posture and breathing for zazen.
  • Every Tuesday morning, we will participate in a community service project with Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin in Madison. Transportation will be provided.
  • Dormitory-style housing is provided and all meals (vegetarian) are included. Special diet accommodations can be made upon request.

The practice period is divided into 5 modules of 4-5 days each. The cost for the entire practice period is $600 ($540 for GPZC members). The cost for each module is $180 ($150 for GPZC members). Fees include all special events, meals and housing. Participants may also register for individual days at a cost of $50 per day ($40 for members). For any block of four consecutive days, the fee will be the same as for one module (i.e., $180).
